How long has disability been accompanying humanity?
Disability has been part of the human experience since prehistory. Archaeological records - bones, burial practices, and symbolic gestures - show that functional diversity is not a modern reality but a condition shared by both prehistoric communities and current societies. The aim of this article is to emphasize that history, prehistory, and archaeology can help us understand and transform contemporary social dynamics. This perspective will be joined by other works that offer a broad framework for reflecting on how archaeology can illuminate the present and provide keys for building more inclusive environments for youth and people with functional diversity.
How did ancient societies understand functional diversity?
Prehistoric societies developed various responses to disability. In the thesis Towards a Bioarchaeology of Care (Tilley, 2013), bioarchaeology of care proposes that disability can only be understood if one considers the cultural, symbolic, and communal context surrounding individuals. According to this proposal, past societies did not limit themselves to recording bodily differences but constructed social meanings from them, integrating them into daily life or even beyond it. This perspective demonstrates that disability in the past was a shared experience, traversed by support and cooperation practices.
Many prehistoric communities generated strategies that allowed people with deformities, diseases, or physical limitations to survive for extended periods. Thus, these individuals were often integrated into social life, which refutes the modern idea that disability always led to abandonment (Devís, 2013).
These interpretations find echoes in current experiences. Some projects analyze the participation of people with intellectual disabilities in scientific and archaeological projects, demonstrating that inclusion fosters personal development, creativity, and social integration(Martín Lerma et al., 2022).
What do the bodies and symbolic gestures of archaeological records reveal?
The analysis of archaeological bodies, their marks, and their ritual contexts show that functional diversity rarely went unnoticed in ancient societies. Also in material culture, we discover that bodily diversity was culturally present: represented in images, attended to in daily actions or integrated into ritual practices. A notable example of this is «Benjamina»(García et al., 2010, pp. 723-724), a girl from Homo heidelbergensis with lambdoid craniosynostosis, a severe skull deformity. Despite this condition, she lived for several years, revealing ongoing care by her group. This finding, the oldest evidence of this pathology, demonstrates that care for vulnerable individuals is a constant in human evolution.
In the Peninsular Bronze Age, research on cultures like the Argárica reveals through slowly healed fractures, degenerative pathologies, and evidence of prolonged assistance, that the survival of certain individuals would not have been possible without collective support(Alarcón García, 2007, pp. Demonstrating also that these cares were not exceptional but part of daily life.
Disability may have had its own conception in funerary rituals. It has been noted that different bodies were buried following customary cults and accompanied by the same objects as other burials, indicating they were fully integrated into their community (Roca et al., 2012). According to another view, the grave goods of disabled individuals were buried with particular items or in prominent positions, suggesting their identity was a significant part of social imagination (Devís, 2013). This reveals that functional diversity was an integral feature of cultural life.
These data raise a pertinent question: if so many ancient societies with limited tools managed to support and value people with physical disabilities, why do so many barriers persist today for young people and those with functional diversity to fully participate in education, science, or public life?
What can the past offer to today's youth with functional diversity?
Combining these approaches - archaeological, anthropological, and sociological- allows us to understand that disability has not been an insurmountable obstacle but another aspect of human experience. Cooperation, attention, and interdependence were essential strategies in societies without modern medical resources.

Workshops and experiences show how active participation in scientific activities transforms the social perception of disability. These projects generate shared learning spaces where functional diversity is understood as a source of value rather than a limitation. These conclusions align with the results of bioarchaeology of care, which demonstrate that disability must be interpreted from human relationships and support possibilities.
Connecting these experiences with the results of "Benjamina" and Argárica culture allows us to propose that inclusion is not a modern idea imposed on society but an organizational form rooted in human history. Knowing that prehistoric communities cared for their vulnerable members helps combat myths, stigmas, and prejudices.
In this sense, history does more than explain; it legitimizes and empowers.
Conclusions
Archaeology demonstrates that intellectual disability has been a fundamental part of the human experience, and many societies developed complex modes of care, integration, and recognition. Perspectives from bioarchaeology of care and studies like "Benjamina" or Argárica culture coincide in indicating that inclusion does not arise solely in the present, and attention to people with disabilities has been a constant practice. Historical and contemporary evidence leads to a clear conclusion: we must build accessible, equitable, and sustainable environments that allow youth and those with functional diversity to participate fully in society. Inclusion is not just a modern aspiration but a deep heritage that accompanies us from the beginnings of humanity.
